Boxes & Moving Kits
No doubt, it pays to purchase the right packing materials. Well-built boxes, bubble wrap, packing tape, and packing peanuts can be purchased at moving companies and truck-rental firms. You may also use plentiful amounts of newspaper, blankets and pillows to can serve as a cushion between delicate items.
Moving Packing Tips
- Tag each box with a description of its contents and its destination (e.g., kitchen, bedroom). Be as specific as you can.
- Keep the weight of your boxes practical. To make heavy items easier to carry, put them in small boxes.
- To prevent the surface or finish of your furniture like wood, don't apply tape directly
- Double-box fragile items and add plenty of cushioning.
What you'll need for the first night/day
When its time to lock and load, make sure the items you need least are loaded first. Place the box containing your fine china on top of the box.
Prepare for the first night in your new home by packing important items in a separate bag and carrying it with you. You may even want to prepare a simple meal that you can heat and serve on your first night.
- For each person in the household: a change of clothes, towel, prescription medicine, toothbrush, and other personal items.
- For everyone: plastic utensils, paper plates, paper towels, plastic cups, toilet paper, toiletries, trash bags, a flashlight, first aid kit including pain relievers, pencil and paper, snacks, beverages, and re-closable plastic bags.
- Small tool kit for re-assembling items that couldn't be moved whole.
Hints & tips for a stress-free Move:
- Try to avoid moving on a Friday - if you do have delays with the financial transaction, you may have to wait until Monday to sort the problem out. This would mean having to pay for storage and another day of removal costs - and your removal team may not be available the following week.
- It's a good idea to meet with your removal company representative in person. That's why we recommend our pre-move survey, which gives you a chance to ask questions and feel completely comfortable with what's going to be happening on the day.
- Remember, there are many other things for you to arrange, apart from the actual move, including:
- final meter readings for electricity, gas, telephone
- redirecting mail
- tradesmen to disconnect fittings such as lights or cookers, or dismantle garden sheds, etc (your removal team cannot do this for you)
- planning travel/overnight accommodation. |
- If you plan to take petrol-powered equipment, such as mowers, motorbikes or strimmers, make sure all fuel is drained and batteries disconnected in preparation for moving. Again, your removal team cannot do this for you.
- If you are packing by yourself, make sure you use suitable, strong boxes – ‘double walled’ boxes are best. Never make the boxes so heavy that they can’t be lifted safely. If a box gets heavy as you’re packing it, start filling it with lighter items, such as bedlinen, towels, cushions or soft toys. Use smaller boxes for books. Visit our Materials page or contact us for information on the types of boxes available at Shore Porters.
- Self-assembly furniture isn’t designed to be taken apart and reassembled. Bear in mind that no matter how experienced your removal team is, this type of furniture won’t always reassemble perfectly after a move.
- Use packing tape to seal the bottom and top of your boxes.
- Label your boxes clearly, preferably along the tape. Mark which room they should be moved to.
